If you have smaller than 40in tv there is no difference between 720p and 1080p but if you have bigger than 40 in I woul recommend 1080p.

Let me explain. A television can only do what it is told to do, so if you buy a 1080p set, you won’t be watching 1080p picture without running a source that provides that high of resolution.
That being said, the only current 1080p quality sources right now are some video games, Blu-ray movies, and certain pay-per view channels. So if you don’t use any of those things, you’ll be watching 720p/1080i all the time anyhow, like if you have HD cable or local channels etc, that will all be 720p/1080i.
However, if you do get Blu-Ray, HD Video Games etc, then go for the 1080p so you can get the full potential out of the set. Now, someday they will make HD cable channels 1080p, but that could be years away, however it doesn’t hurt to be prepared either. If you are getting a TV over 40″ in size, I would recommend going ahead and getting a 1080p set anyway, since almost everything that size comes standard with it.
If you are getting smaller than 40″, forget 1080p, you don’t need it, and it won’t make a difference. Hopefully this all didn’t confuse you to much, hope this helped. You can email me if you have any other TV questions, I sell them for a living so I know my stuff pretty well.
(LCDs are generally a better idea than plasmas, as plasma is becoming more obsolete. If you can get an LCD over 40″ with 1080p, go for it.)
TV size matters. If you’re looking at sets of 37′ or smaller, then 720p is fine. Most consumer and guru guides settle on needing to break 40″ and more so 50″ to get the advantages of 1080p.
Viewing distance certainly matters too though. At 8-10 feet, I think you would want a 46″ – 52″ set to worry about 1080p. If what you’re looking at is smaller, then I think 720p will serve you just fine then. You just won’t notice the 1080p advantages at that distance in smaller sets.
Also, the other post makes a good point about your TV will only show what you feed it. Right now broadcast TV is 1080i or 720p, that’s all they are airing. Only BluRay is 1080p. So do you think you’ll make the transition to BluRay for this TV? If so, and the size is right, okay 1080p adds some further value. But if you’re not really a DVD/BluRay kind of person, then 1080p actually might not add much value for you at all.
Will broadcast TV go 1080p? Maybe, but I can’t see it happening within the next 5 years. There are plenty of channels that don’t even exist on HD at all yet, so we’re still in the transition phase of things. I wouldn’t try to future proof your TV at 1080p for broadcast television.
