It might sound slightly better, but it won’t make up for the laptop connection/laptop sound quality.

It depends. When you play it from your laptop, if the laptop speakers are making the sound then no it wont help. However, if it’s the speakers in the tv making the sound then yes, it should help, unless you have tried using other sources such as a dvd player and those sounded fine. if say a dvd player sounds good on your tv and your laptop sounds bad then it’s the laptop’s fault but if a dvd player sounds bad ane your laptop sounds bad then yeah it will help.
In a nutshell, if the sound is coming from your tv speakers and it sounds bad then yes the home theater should help. TV’s these days are so thin that they can’t fit decent speakers in them so they sound like crap.
I would not recommend any of those home theater in a box. They are not very reliable or flexible for adding or upgrading. Some do not have any optical audio input at all. The only system that is worth to mention is the Onkyo HT-S3400, it is a 5.1 receiver and a set of speakers. It is capable of accepting many HDMI input and can be upgraded. Yes, the sound would be much better than any tv can provide. Demo the system at any Fry’s Electronic with your own source of music. Let your own ears be the judge to any speakers. The only home theater in a box that is recommended by home theater magazine is the Onkyo HT-S9400. Hope this will help you out.
